Many designers are taking advantage of the rapidly falling price of TFT-LCD panels to differentiate their products. Color TFT-LCD panels enhance the user interface and add value to products like white goods, thermostats, security panels, portable medical equipment, and exercise equipment. Most of these applications use light to medium animation along with touch-screen interfaces.
Renesas is offering the Direct Drive LCD solution which uses simple low-cost H8S or H8SX Flash MCUs to drive the TFT-LCD and touch-screen, and to run the remainder of the embedded application. The Direct Drive LCD solution is cost-effective, simple to use, consumes less power, and has a smaller footprint on the PCB when compared to microprocessor systems frequently used to fulfill these design requirements.
Renesas also offers a full MCU development kit with a QVGA resolution TFT-LCD panel, free graphics library and demo firmware, and a 60-day unlimited license for the High-performance Embedded Workshop (HEW) software development tool. Graphic software is also available for Direct Drive LCD from 3rd party vendors Swell Software, Altia, and Segger.
